introducing reddit reality check • rrc.fyi

I used to be quite active on Reddit, especially in certain tech-related subreddits, but my account was eventually banned after I pointed out the increasing presence of promotional content and questionable reviews being shared as genuine posts.

After losing my old account, I've retreated to a safer alt that I only use for engaging with movie communities. That experience sparked an idea that I finally brought to life last weekend: Reddit Reality Check (rrc.fyi).

my subjectivity

To be clear, I built this tool purely for fun over a weekend.

There's no monetary gain or hidden agenda behind it. It's simply my way of exploring some technical concepts while creating something that reflects my observations about community authenticity.

Platforms like Reddit, once hubs of raw, user-driven dialogue, are now susceptible to subtle forms of manipulation - ranging from shill accounts to AI-powered content farms. The result is an online environment that can feel more like a maze of noise than a space for genuine interaction.

Reddit Reality Check is my attempt to make sense of that shift.

It’s not a definitive tool, and it’s certainly not perfect - it’s just an experiment that tries to surface engagement patterns in a playful but reflective way.

It might reveal something useful. Or not. But at the very least, it gives you a different lens to look through - at yourself, at others, and at the platform as a whole.

how rrc.fyi works

While anyone could manually look through a profile history, this micro tool automates the process and provides a quick "reality check" on how a user engages with Reddit communities.

It analyzes commenting and posting patterns to determine:

The analysis is presented in two ways: a straightforward assessment based on objective factors, and a lighter "roast" section that delivers the feedback in a more humorous way - similar to those personality tests that tell you what kind of bread you'd be.

tech

I built Reddit Reality Check using Cloudflare Workers - just a single worker.js of around 1,500 lines of code. This project also gave me a great excuse to experiment with some specific features in Cloudflare I hadn't fully utilized before.

The "infrastructure" includes:

The project was also a good playground for testing some Cloudflare features in a practical context rather than just reading documentation.

Currently, the tool only analyzes your 25 posts and 50 comments to generate its assessment. This limitation exists mainly to manage resources.

inspiration

Reddit Reality Check is heavily inspired by Reddit Wrapped. While Reddit Wrapped focuses more on your activity patterns in a fun way, rrc.fyi zooms in on how you actually engage with communities.

It's not about judgment so much as reflection – sometimes we don't realize how our online presence comes across until we see the patterns laid bare.

So that's my little weekend project. A simple tool born from a combination of personal experience, technical curiosity, and a dash of humor.

AGAIN, Reddit Reality Check is an experimental tool built over a weekend. It may break at any time and comes with no guarantees regarding uptime.

sign off

I'm going to take a break for a while and won’t be updating this site for a few weeks. However, I’ll continue jotting down ideas and drafts for blog posts in my notes app.

I’m meeting with some people about new projects and starting fresh, so my focus will be shifting in that direction. If you're building something interesting and would like to collaborate, feel free to reach out. I'm open to contributing in areas like go-to-market strategy and product ops.

If you’d prefer smaller updates instead of full blog posts, you can check out my status feed. There’s also an RSS feed for /status if you prefer that.
